Introduction
Madison Water Utility in collaboration with Daniels Construction has embarked on a comprehensive remediation project to restore Well 15’s functionality, previously a vital water source for Madison’s east side. In 2019, the well ceased operations due to the presence of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). Our goal is to ensure the delivery of safe, clean drinking water to residents. Steps Involved in the project
The remediation project for Well 15 has followed a structured process to address contamination issues effectively, including:
- Contaminant Identification: Following the detection of PFAFS, PCE, and TCE in Well 15’s water, comprehensive testing and analysis were conducted to assess the extent of contamination.
- Feasibility Studies: A feasibility study was commissioned to assess the viability of employing granular activated carbon (GAC) for PFAFS removal. This study provided crucial insights into the most suitable remediation methods.
- Design and Planning: Engineering consultants were engaged to develop preliminary designs for a PFAFS treatment system. These designs underwent rigorous evaluation and refinement to ensure optimal efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards.
- Community Engagement: Through the project, Madison Water Utility prioritized transparency and community involvement. Public forums, informational sessions, and regular updates have facilitated meaningful dialogue and input towards the project.
- Construction Phase: The groundbreaking of the Well happened May 15, 2024. Now, specialized filtration infrastructure, including GAC and ion exchange (IX) resin systems will be installed. Construction will also include lowering the floors and raising the ceilings to accommodate two powerful filtration tanks. Well 15 construction is hoped to be completed and operational by Summer 2025.
